Origin and meaning of Venter

With regards to the origin of the surname Venter, it seems there isn't absolute clarity.
  • The origin I like the best is the explanation that venter means "soldier on foot". At some stage in history, various surnames got their origin from war terms. This origin for Venter also led to the word infantry.
  • Venter can also mean hawker or street merchant, as the English 'vendor' or 'vender'.
  • There is a city in the Netherlands named Deventer which could also have some relationship with the origin of the surname.
  • In South Africa it is also getting quite common practice to refer to a trailor as a venter, like the word cutex is used instead of nail polish, where it is actually only a certain brand of polish or then trailor.
  • A Venter can also be someone who is busy giving his or her opinion or a speaker. It is from the English 'vent' - to speak/ let out.
  • In Zoology, venter roughly means the stomach area of an animal or organism.
  • In Law Science venter is used to refer to an unborn child. The child is 'in venter'.

Venters in other countries
  • There is still a reasonable group of Venters in Germany, where the SA primary ancestor came from.
  • America has a lot of Venters.
  • Argentinia has Venters who moved there from South Africa early in the previous century???
  • These days so many families, including Venter families, have a son in Australia, a daughter in Saudi Arabia and another son in Engeland or Canada or, or,... So the Venters of South Africa are spreading further and further.
